If you are a woman and feel you lost rights yesterday, please read this and subsequent blogs. Yesterday was full of lots of emotions on both sides of the issue. I am going to write a couple of blogs over the next few weeks to address some of the concerns raised by this decision. I will begin each blog the same way: If you have had an abortion or are the father, grandparent, or other relative of an aborted child and still have trouble processing it, there is help.

"It's not about whether the justices think abortion is illegal or immoral. It’s about who should determine such.”

Even RBG Agreed

On Friday, the Supreme Court’s decision overturned an erroneous ruling. Even Ruth Bader Ginsberg felt that the 1973 ruling was wrong. Not because she was pro-life but because the findings of that court were in error. The job of the SCOTUS is to interpret laws not create them. Abortion is not a right addressed in the constitution. Therefore, per the constitution, it falls back to the states to decide if it is permissible or not. The Roe v. Wade decision was a gross misuse of power by the justices. Their decision created a law. The June 24,2022 ruling reversed that decision and applied it correctly making it the state’s responsibility to create (or not) laws on abortion. Now, some folks are even more upset over Justice Thomas’s remarks about re-hearing arguments on same sex marriage and contraception. This is because the SCOTUS did the exact same thing when making decisions on these cases. No where does the constitution address marriage or contraception. You do not have a “right” to be married to anyone. You do not have a “right” to contraception. Again, these rulings were erroneously applied and should be the responsibility of individual states to govern. This is how our government works. (Remember the 3 branches of government - legislative, judicial, and executive). However, for decades now, the SCOTUS has been more about making laws (legislative duties) than interpreting them. The decision Friday is about correcting an error in applying a law. It’s not about whether the justices think abortion is illegal or immoral. It’s about who should determine such. As should have been decided in 1973, it is the states who should decide.
